Schematic Design & Design Development
A growing trend in healthcare is the recognition that our surroundings have a direct impact on emotional well-being, which translates directly to our physical health. The Cardiac Care Team at Good Shepherd Hospital recognized the need for healing gardens associated directly with the hospital's new cardiac care addition. Three gardens are provided that incorporate seating areas focused on water features for the use of patients, visitors and staff. These exterior spaces provide both a physical and visual retreat from the stressful environment of the hospital.
Two intimate healing gardens are nested at opposite corners of the building linked directly to the interior visitor waiting areas. The third and larger garden is adjacent to the main entrance to the Cardiac Care Center and is visible from the main reception area. The terrain provides an opportunity for a dry streambed with stairs intimating a waterfall through the space, which incorporates seat walls and tables for a variety of seating options. The plant material was selected from a palette of hardy, native species to provide a variety of texture, color and scent throughout the seasons.
