The requirement for a Planned Unit Development was triggered when Advocate Condell Medical Center secured a Certificate of Need (CON) for a state-of-the-art cardiac care facility on the Libertyville, Illinois campus. Under tight deadlines the development of the PUD and the permitting for the new addition were conducted simultaneously.

The Design Team collaborated to predict the Client's needs going forward two decades including a Master Landscape Plan to address all site perimeter buffer conditions and to establish visual identity for the Campus.

The solution to this challenge was twofold; one, creation of a master plant legend and; two, development of a buffer treatment for each potential perimeter condition based upon zoning land use and site topography. These treatments will direct the landscape development as the PUD is implemented over the next 20 years.

The first project governed by the PUD at Advocate Condell Medical Center is a state-of-the-art cardiac care facility and patient care addition. A radial concept in the planting at the building entrance compliments and reinforces the strong forms of the building design.

This addition required the relocation of the Intergenerational Daycare CenterĂ¢€™s (IDC) playground to an interior courtyard created between the building addition and the existing facility. A patio space is planned outside the atrium room to provide an opportunity for the adults daycare clients to watch the children play and interact with them in an access controlled environment.

A healing garden is located in an enclosed courtyard with views from the serpentine walk that connects the addition to the existing building, the chapel and retail space. Seating areas are strategically placed for privacy with focused views to feature elements within the garden. Water cascading over groups of basalt columns and rain chains connected to water basins are key elements that engage the senses. Plantings are placed to frame views through the garden from the interior spaces.
